- Hopes the Birkebeiner can continue to be
a part of the World Cup!

Sindre Bergan, Norwegian cross-country director hopes the Birkebeiner will stand out as a positive experience being the last race in the cross-country World Cup. “The Birk” is a real nice race with a great terrain and very good tracks. I hope they can become part of the World Cup in years to come.

- I think it could be a very fine arrangment for racers who have chosen to og another kind of race. Many of them has never gone the Birkebeiner before, and will have the chance to experience a real tour-race in a great terrain with wonderful tracks. Both us in the support-team and the racers themselves are looking forward to this. I hope it will be a successful arrangment, and that foreigners that don’t know the race will get a positve impression. That way Birken might continue to be part of the World Cup.

Bergan went ”The Birk” once himself in 1985. He didn’t fancy that even though he was in very good shape. The weekend before he had gone the 50km in Holmenkollen, and did very well. In the Birkebeiner he ended on “just” 20^th place.

Faith in Norwegian victory
Sindre Bergan has great belief in a Norwegian victory both in mens- and womens class. He thinks the the Norwegian skiers are absolutely the best ones.

- Anita Moen has a good chance to win, but will get competition from both Bente Skari, Belmondo and Paruzzi who where great in the Olympics.

In mens class Erling Jevne is the big favourite but he too will get competiotion. Thomas Alsgaard, Kristen Skjeldal, Anders Aukland and Odd-Bjørn Hjelmeseth probably will be his strongest competiotor. Bergan say that Elofsson and Ivanov can be in the victorybattle, if they found back their good shape.

- Not that big difference between ”The Birk” and Kollen 50km
Bergan tells us that the racers haven’t prepared in a special way, because they have raced World Cup all the way until the Birkebeiner.

- The difference isn’t that big between a 50km in Holmenkollen and the Birkebeiner, there are only a few kilometers difference. The only thing the racers has to consider, is to eat and drink enought the weeks before they are racing.

- Not that important what the skiers eat the night before the race
Bergan don’t think it’s important what the skiers eat the night beofre the race. –The most important thing is that you eat and drink in the days beofre the race. The night before I think the participants have to eat normal. There is no special diet for any of the skiers, and usually eat what they want. I have no faith in pasta as a wondermedicine.

During the race Bergan will be in one of the national team drinkingstations a bit before the official drinkingstation at Sjusjøen

- No point in using backpack for the WorldCup-skiers
Bergan don’t think it’s a good idea that the World Cup-skiers have to use a backpack as the regular Birkebeiners. – To go a two-hour trip on ski with a backpack I can’t see the point with. You normally train that long without a backpack, wo why go just this race with a backpack?

Bergan is enjoying his job as leader of the crosscountryteam, but is quitting after this season. – I don’t know what to do. I have no job offers as of now.

- Intens exitement during the Olympics
The head of the National team was very pleased when Tor Arne Hetland won the sprint during the Olympics, as we saw on TV. I was equally pleased when the other Norwegians won, even though TV didn’t get that.

Naturally I would be pleased if Thomas Alsgaard won the World Cup, but it won’t be the same as the Olympics. That was a more intense excitement. But I am always pleased when the Norwegian skiers do well.

Get recognized at street
Even though many people don’t know how Sindre Bergan look, several people recognize him at street. Especially right after the Olympics I have been noticed a lot. Its obvious that a lot of people have watched the Salt Lake City Olympics on TV. But I’m not bothered on the street, to put it that way, Bergan concludes.
