Course and Technique: 58 kilometers. Start at Rena, finish at Lillehammer. Classic technique.

CLASSES:
FIS World Cup Skiers start in the first wave. Birkebeinerrennet has its own Elite class, 14 Age classes and one Touring class for both women and men. all entrants must have passed 16 years of age of December 31, 2001. To qualify for the Elite class male entrants must during the three last years have completed the Birkebeinerrenn within 3:30.00 hrs, female entrants within 4:15.00 hrs or have placed among the top 25% in a national championship during the last three years. The age is reckoned as of December 31, 2001. Please control that you have filled in the year of birth on the entry form.

Starting order: The various classes will start in waves, women (W) and men (M) in the dame age class staring together.

RULES AND REGULATIONS:
The race is run according to the rules and regulations of the FIS, the Norwegian Ski Association and the special regulations stated in invitation and race instructions. Offence against any of these rules may lead to disqualification.

CLOTHING/BACKPACK: Entrants should be dressed and equipped for the possibility of severe mountain weather. All entrants must carry a backpack of at least 3.5 kg throughout the race. The pack should contain a windbreaker, spare gloves, food, drink, wax etc. Backpacks will be checked.

ENTRIES: Entries received after February 17, 2002 will not be included in the printed race programme. The numbers of entries is limited to 10 000. No entries after Saturday March 16, 2002 or when 10 000 entries is reached.

ENTRY FEE:
Before January 13, 2002 NOK 620.-
January 13 March 16, 2002 NOK 820,-

All entries are binding. If a person for any reason cannot participate, the entry fee will not be refunded. However another person may take over the entry before March 16, 2002 for the extra fee of NOK 200. If the race must be cancelled, 50% of the entry fee will be refunded.

ENTRY CONFIRMATION/RACE INSTRUCTIONS: The confirmation of registration with other relevant information will be mailed to entrants after registration. The entry lists on our home page will be updated regularly. See our homepage www.birkebeiner.no.

ACCOMMODATION: Basis accommodation on mattresses in schools etc is available at Rena from Friday to Saturday before the race. The price is NOK 150,-. Reservations should be indicated on the entry form and paid together with the entry fee. Please note that you will need a sleeping bag. After March 16, reservations is not longer possible, however you may obtain such accommodation by attendance at the Race Office at Rena on Friday before the race. The price is then NOK 200.- Please contact the raceoffice. For accommodation at hotels or pensions in the Lillehammer/Hamar/Elverum/Rena area, please make your own reservations to the hotel.

BUS TRANSPORTATION
From Oslo to Rena:
-Friday, March 22: at 6 p.m from Oslo Busstermial (at Oslo Central Stn.) Reservations.
From Lillehammer to Rena:
-Friday, March 22: at 4 p.m and at 7 p.m Fm Lillehammer bus terminal. Reservations.
-Saturday, March 23: between 4.30 a.m and 6.00 a.m Fm Lillehammer bus terminal. Reservations.
-Saturday, March 23: fm the street outside Håkons Hall (baggage pick up and shower). Between 3 p.m and 7 p.m. Reservations not necessary.

BIB DISTRIBUTION: Bibs may be picked up either at Rena or at Håkons Hall in Lillehammer. You must indicate on the entry form where you want to pick up the bibs. The pick-up site cannot be changed after March 16, 2002.

PRIZES/AWARDS: All entrants who complete the race will receive a "participation-medal" at the finish. In each class except the Touring class prizes will be awarded to approximately 25% of the numbers of starters. However, no prize if the finishing time is outside the "Birkebeiner medal" maximum time. In the Elite class there will be money prizes. All entrants will receive the official result list and a diploma with your name and your intermediate- and finish times printed as well as the maximum time for your class.

WORLDLOPPET: Birkebeinerrennet is a member of Worldloppet, an organization of the biggest and best-known long distance ski races in the world. Worldloppet passport are sold at the Birkebeiner Office in Lillehammer.
